Ruff-Necked or Nootka Humming-Bird

Trochilus rufus

Discovered at Nootka Sound but ranging widely, this splendid bird shows upper plumage of rufous or cinnamon over head, neck, back, and rump, the crown and wing-coverts glossed coppery green, with quills and tail-tips pale smoky brown and dark brown feet. The whole chin and throat bear scale-like feathers of brilliant ruby lustre changing in every light, the breast and vent nearly white, while the female is green-gold where the male is cinnamon, her throat merely spotted with ruby.
