Volume 32, Plate XVII / Ichthyology (Fish)
Spotted Saw-Bellied Salmon
Serrasalmo punctatus
Of a regular oval outline with fewer angular undulations than its kin, this fish is bluish grey shading to silvery, the lower parts and opercula and tail vividly contrasted with deep vermilion, the dorsal fin bluish olive shading to yellow and spotted, like two-thirds of the body, with minute round black spots. Its projecting lower jaw and both jaws bear strong triangular teeth; the small specimen of four and a half inches may show paler colour from youth.
