American Black Bass

Centropristes nigricans

Closely allied to its relatives but with all fine teeth, a spined opercle, and a saw-toothed preopercle, this rather lengthened fish is greenish brown above, paler and yellowish on the sides, the living colours brighter as rich olive green flushed with pink below. The dorsal is grey, crossed by three whitish bands, the other fins greyish black, the tail oddly projecting at its middle, and the abundant fish is much esteemed at table in United States rivers.
