Black Maned Lion

Leo melanochaitus

A very large variety of the Cape, this lion attains the largest size, with a bull dog head, a facial line much depressed between the eyes, and large pointed ears edged with black. A great black mane extends beyond the shoulders, a fringe of black hair hangs beneath the belly, and a stout tail completes a frame generally lower in proportion than other lions.
