Black Guillemot

Uria grylle

A more northern guillemot differing in colour from all the others, the breeding dress a deep brownish black relieved by an oval patch of pure white on the wing and vermilion-red legs and feet. It breeds in caves, rock fissures, and piles of blocks from the south of Scotland northward to Orkney, Shetland, and the arctic, is seldom killed in winter, and assumes a clouded, partly white plumage in that season.
