Glaucous Gull
Larus glaucus
An arctic gull first noticed as a regular winter visitant to Shetland, the winter specimen white clouded with pale clove-brown streaked on crown and cheeks, the mantle and wings pearl grey, the quills nearly pure white at the tips. Extremely voracious, one disgorging a little auk when struck, it breeds on projecting rock ledges or on shingle above high-water mark like the tern, the young greyish white barred with pale brown.
