Great Rusa

Rusa hippelaphus

Probably inhabiting the islands of the Indian Archipelago, the Great Rusa is remarkable for the ample mane clothing its neck and shoulders, giving it a horse-like aspect that earned the ancient name Hippelaphus. The Paris specimen stood about three feet at the shoulder, with a thick coat of long, dry, frizzled hair of uniform dull brown, save for white about the muzzle, belly, lower lip, and part of the ears, and tawny inner limbs and eyebrows.
