Red-Breasted Sunbird

Cinnyris pulchella

An elegant little sunbird common in Senegal and also found in the Caffre forests, the male in full dress entirely rich gilded-green above and below save a transverse patch of bright scarlet on the breast shading into pale straw-yellow. The quills and tail are blackish-brown, the bill and feet black, and the two middle tail-feathers extend two and a half inches beyond the rest, while the female is grey-brown-olive above and lighter beneath.
