Thous of Nubia

Thous variegatus

The Thous of Nubia stands about an inch lower than the foregoing, with a broad buff head and hard upper hairs ringed black and buff whose tips gather in small pencils like chequer work on a buff ground, the ears very long, the nose blunt and black, and a short chequered tail with a dark tip. It dwells in rocky regions without burrowing, feeding on small mammalia and birds, and in old age a black mane runs along its back.
