Dongola Race

The horses of Nubia and Dongola, esteemed above the Arab, often run black and rise above sixteen hands with ample manes and tails, handsome, powerful, supple, and docile, bred where sandy desert yields scarcely any pasturage. Fed on nutritious dourra and washed dried roots, ridden only as stallions and secured by a rope on the fore-foot, they make excellent war horses; usual colours are bay, black, and white, never grey nor dappled, with rather upright pasterns.
