Volume 31, Plate IX / Mammalia (Mammals)
English Race-Horse
Descended chiefly from Turk, Barb, and Arab sires such as the Byerly Turk, Godolphin Barb, and Darley Arabian, the British race-horse resembles the noblest Arab but surpasses it in stature and power, with graceful head, oblique shoulders, high withers, powerful quarters, and flat legs. Its colours are bay, chestnut, brown, black, and grey, never dun or roan, while the heavier hunter requires stoutness and stature near sixteen hands.
