Crisp-Haired Horse
Most widely spread over Europe and once wild in the Alps and northern forests, the black stock is typified in the heavy Flemish or Belgian breed, almost invariably black, with a large head, clumsy limbs, broad hoofs, thick mane, and fringed fetlocks. From crossing such mares with old English and Norman blood came the splendid English draught horse, while the noblest Continental black is the Friesland fast-trotter, standing fourteen to sixteen hands.
