Spinous Shark

Echinorhinus spinosus

Nowhere abundant and only lately added to the British Fauna, the Spinous Shark has occurred a few times on the Yorkshire coast and off Land’s End, Brixham, and Berry Head, varying from four to eight feet, its most remarkable peculiarities being the first dorsal placed opposite the abdominal fin and the numerous rose-like spines scattered over the skin. Sluggish and unwieldy, it is seldom seen near the surface, being taken in deep water near the bottom.
