A winter visitant to England and southern Scotland that grows more maritime in that season, the male crested with greenish black head, reddish brown lower neck, black back, grey flanks, and white breast with conspicuous black-margined feathers above the wing. It breeds by retired Highland lochs in down-lined nests among brushwood, the female resembling the Dundiver, and ranges through northern Europe, Japan, and North America.
