Long-Tailed, or Northern Hareld
Harelda glacialis
A remarkable duck that puts on an entirely different and darker dress in the breeding season, the winter male showing pale brown cheeks, much white, a large oval pitch-brown neck patch, and greatly elongated central tail feathers. Only a winter visitant to Britain, becoming commoner northward and around the distant isles, it breeds by inland lakes in Norway, Iceland, Labrador, and other northern lands.
