Horned or Sclavonian Grebe

Podiceps cornutus

A handsome grebe distinguished from its near relative by the form of its bill, the summer dress bearing a glossy greenish black ruff, buff-orange occipital tufts or horns, reddish orange neck and breast, and shining silky white below. Rare in full breeding dress in England and unknown breeding in Scotland, it is common there in winter dress, next to the Little Grebe, ranging from the Tweed to Shetland and through Europe and North America.
