Volume 40, Plate XXIX / Ornithology (Birds)
Fulmar
Procellaria glacialis
An accidental winter visitant to southern England, gull-like in form and plumage, the body pure white with brownish grey mantle and wings tinted bluish, a gamboge-yellow bill and yellowish grey feet, though some specimens are wholly brownish grey. It breeds at the western isles and Outer Hebrides and in arctic latitudes including Spitzbergen and Iceland, attends stricken whales feeding on the carcasses, and yields oil prized by the islanders for ailments.
