Mountain Partridge

Perdix cinerea, var. Montana

This alpine variety of Perdix cinerea is met more often in mountainous districts than lowlands, yet mingles freely with birds of common plumage, its feathers a deep sienna brown, often blended with whitish or reddish white. The specimens run smaller than ordinary partridges, and as the species varies greatly with climate and locality, some have raised this migratory form to a distinct species, the Damascus partridge, though Temminck found no good distinctions.
