Two Banded Diploprion

Diploprion bifasciatum

Discovered on the coast of Java, this singular fish has a compressed body and a head nearly as deep as the body, tapering toward the tail, with three strong opercular spines, a serrated preopercle, and a large first dorsal of eight strong rays. Its fine reddish yellow is crossed by two black bands, one through the eye and one oblique to the anal, the long ventral rays reaching beyond the anal, and it is known only at about six inches.
