Mediterranean Apogon

Apogon rex Mullorum

The sole Mediterranean species of its kind, taken at Marseilles, Nice, Naples, and Malta during its summer spawning approach to shore and much esteemed at table, this gaudy little fish scarcely exceeds six inches. Its short compressed body is crimson red, paler below, relieved by three deep black markings and scattered dots, with large easily shed scales, separated dorsal fins, and a doubly edged serrated preopercle.
