Long Tailed Serranus

Serranus phæton

Figured from a specimen in the Jardin du Roi without record of its habits or native country, this fish of about six inches is in its dried state of a uniform dull tint. Its singular character lies in the tail, whose two central rays are lengthened and bound together by a sheathing membrane that extends into a narrow filament equalling the body in length.
