Salmon-Formed Growler

Grystes salmoides

Bearing a provincial American name thought to arise from a croaking sound, this fish of the North American rivers, abundant about New York, reaches two feet and is of excellent flavour, taking the hook eagerly. Distinguished by a smooth, unarmed head with neither spines nor teeth on the gill covers, it is an unobtrusive olive lightening to greyish white below, its salmon-like tail crossed by a dark bar; a kindred New Holland species haunts the Macquary river.
