Ruby-Coloured Etelis

Etelis carbunculus

Taken near the Sechelle Islands and named for its resemblance to the ruby, this splendid fish of about eleven inches differs from the perches in possessing strong long teeth approaching those of the pike-perch, with the opercle ending in two spines. Its conspicuous eye is a golden orange, the scaling large and marked, and the whole ground colour a bright ruby red relieved by golden yellow stripes running along the ridges of the scales.
