Collared Peccary

Dycoteles torquatus

Inhabiting the forests of eastern South America in small families, the Collared Peccary feeds on vegetables and roots and appears grayish at a distance, though its stiff hairs are ringed with black and yellowish white. A narrow oblique white line crosses from behind the shoulders to the neck, the long bristles along the back form a mane erected upon irritation, and a concealed gland upon the rump betrays itself by the swirl of surrounding hair.
