White Lipped Peccary

Dycoteles labiatus

Larger than the Collared Peccary and darker, the White Lipped Peccary takes its name from the white margins of the lips, sides of the mouth and nose, while its black hairs bear a few brownish rings and its long mane nearly conceals the ears. Gregarious inhabitants of Paraguay, they assemble in vast troops of up to a thousand, led by an old male, swim well, follow the foremost across obstacles, and furnish excellent eating.
