Pesquet’s Dayptilus

Dasyptilus Pequetii

A rare and lately discovered bird upwards of twenty inches long, named for the hairy, setaceous feathers of its nearly bare head and neck and its generally rigid plumage. The bill is longer than deep, the upper mandible bending suddenly down like a raptor’s, while the plumage is shining velvet-black save for crimson greater wing-coverts, tail-coverts, secondary webs, belly, vent, and thighs.
