Black-Billed Gaper

Cymbirhynchus masutus

A remarkable bird with deep red rigid glossy throat feathers, the upper plumage deep black glossed with green save a slender white lanceolate stripe on the scapulars and a crimson rump, the under plumage from a black breast band crimson covering the ears. The shoulder edge is orange, the three shortest tail feathers bear oblique white spots, the bill blue black, the female marked by fulvous tipped wing covers, total length exactly nine inches.
