Volume 27, Plate XXIV / Ichthyology (Fish)
Dolphin of the Ancients
Coryphæna hippuris
An active, voracious fish about five feet long, as elegant in form as brilliant in colour, greedily pursuing the flying-fish that form its favourite food, and bearing a crest upon the cranium from which its name derives. It is silvery-blue above with deeper azure markings and golden reflexions, citron-yellow below marked with pale blue, the fins variously yellow, lead colour and black, though these vivid hues fade once it is taken from the water.
