Volume 31, Plate IV / Mammalia (Mammals)
Villous Horse
Residing still where the most ancient records place it, the grey stock is naturally of higher stature than the bay, broader and more solidly limbed, with dapplings purer than the general coat upon quarters and shoulder, the colour whitening with age over a slaty blue skin. It mixed best with the noble bay of the East and the black of the West, and in eastern Europe is prone to boils it tears open.
