Volume 32, Plate XI / Ichthyology (Fish)
Gigantic Sudis
Sudis gigas
A great fish entirely covered with large rounded scales, its dorsal and anal bases thickened, muscular, and scaled, the rays continued round a narrow caudal web formed for powerful sculling. When freshly taken it is richly coloured, umber-brown above shading through a brilliant crimson lake, with darker-based scales and umber blotches near the tail; plentiful in the Rupununi, Branco, Negro, and Amazon, it supplies extensive fisheries and is excellent and very fat when fresh.
