Thick-Lipped & Black-Striped Chalceus

Chalceus labrosus

1. Thick-Lipped Chalceus. A small delicately marked species typical in form, with elongated maxillary bones seemingly forming the whole margin of the lips, taken in the river Padauiri in March and measuring about five and a quarter inches. Of a silvery bluish grey darker on the back, with bluish-green fins, it bears a broad black mark on the deeper anal fin and a dark bar across the bluer tail; its scales are large and deciduous and it is short-lived.
2. Black-Striped Chalceus. A curiously marked male from fourteen to sixteen inches long, taken by hook at Pedrero on the Rio Negro with its stomach full of rotten cassada roots, placed doubtfully in this genus as it lacks the elongated anal fin. Dark olive green on head and back shading to pale yellowish white on the lower half, with dull green fins, it bears a deep black stripe half an inch broad running along the lateral line from the caudal fork forward.
