Strong-Toothed Hydrocyon

Hydrocyon? armatus

A remarkable strongly armed fish found in all Guiana’s rivers, known by the length of its canine teeth, which in the lower jaw are so long they protrude through sockets in the upper, weighing ten or twelve pounds. Silvery bluish green on back and head, with greenish fins webbed with blue and tipped red, black spots over the opercles, and spare canines lying flat to replace breakages like a snake’s fangs, it preys on smaller fish swallowed whole.
