Pale Red-Streaked Salmon-Carp

Prochilodus rubro-tæniatus

Found in the Rios Branco, Negro, Essequibo, and its tributaries, weighing about two pounds and taken only by arrow or net since it will not bite, this esteemed white-fleshed fish is pale brown banded with pale rose, the silvery body darker and greenish on the back and striped with purple. Toothless with fleshy sucking lips, large slightly fringed striated scales, and a second gizzard-like stomach filled with fine clay, it reaches eighteen inches and lives briefly out of water.
