Beautiful Salmon-Carp

Prochilodus insignis

Plentiful in the Rio Branco and esteemed for food, killed by arrows since it will not take bait, this gaudily coloured fish is silvery blue inclining to rose on the belly, with a greenish head and yellow and red eyes. Toothless with fleshy sucking lips, large striated fringed scales, and a second clay-filled stomach, it measures eleven and a half inches, lives only minutes out of water, and bears a deep lake anal fin and bright orange-red banded tail.
