Guiana Gar-Fish

Belone Guianensis

Of the same form as the Gangetic Esox, this Guiana gar differs from European Belone in its rounded fan-shaped tail and shorter anal fin, seldom exceeding fifteen inches and taken in the river Padauiri in February. Its colour is a uniform dark olive, paler on the sides and bluish on the belly, with very small deciduous scales and minutely toothed jaws; it feeds on insects, beetles, and wood-ants.
