Corvina of the Essequibo

Corvina grunniens

This Corvina of the Essequibo, silvery blue with black-spotted dorsal and anal fins, has fine teeth in single rows, a straight lateral line, and red oval eyes, and was killed at Comacca Island in September. It feeds on insects and small fish among the rapids, makes a curious grating noise beneath canoes, and its stomach was filled with the debris of fresh-water shells; the flesh is good but bony.
