Northern Chimæra, or Rabbit-Fish

Chimæra monstrosa

First noticed as British by Pennant and known here only from the seas around Shetland, where it is called the Rabbit-Fish, the Northern Chimaera is better known to the Norwegians and is beautifully coloured, dark brown above varied with yellowish brown and silvery, bright silver below, with large brilliant green eyes. The male bears a fringed forehead caruncle and trifid ventral appendages, and an oil from the liver is esteemed for the eyes.
