Volume 4, Plate XIII / Mammalia (Mammals)

Ounce

Felis uncia

The Ounce is an imperfectly known large spotted cat, distinguished chiefly by its much lengthened, shaggy hair and a greyish-white coat yellowish above. Noticed first by Buffon and figured from a specimen brought from the Gulf of Persia, it is thought to belong to the higher mountain ranges of northern or western Asia, and may yet prove a distinct and interesting species awaiting fuller examination by those who receive such skins.
