Volume 9, Plate XVI / Ornithology (Birds)
Turkish or Mawmet Pigeon
Columba Turcica
A race held in England to include the Carrier, marked by great size, a bill tuberculated at the base, eyes ringed with broad naked red skin, elevated tarsi, and long wings, though some authors apply the name improperly. The true Carrier shows extraordinary attachment to its birthplace, flying back over hundreds of miles when freed, rising by circular evolutions to a great height before darting homeward as if guided by a compass.
