Crowned Goura Pigeon

Lophyrus coronatus

A magnificent bird of twenty-seven to twenty-eight inches, the largest of its kind, native to Java, Banda, New Guinea, and the Moluccas, inhabiting forests, feeding on berries, seeds, and grain, and nesting in a tree with two eggs. It bears a large erect semicircular crest of silky feathers; the head, neck, and underparts are pure greyish-blue, the back purplish-brown, and a broad white band crosses the wings, its flesh of excellent flavour.
