Red-Throated Piha
Querula rubricollis
A singular bird of deep, uniform black plumage with little gloss, the male distinguished by rigid, very deep crimson feathers upon the throat, while females and young males want this ornament and remain wholly black. Confined to Demerara, Surinam, and their neighbourhood, it dwells in forests, builds a large nest on the highest branches where four eggs are laid, feeds on insects and fruits, and utters a soft note resembling pi hau hau.
