Volume 9, Plate XVII / Ornithology (Birds)
Collared Turtle
Turtur risorius
A species long kept in captivity, abundant in Egypt and the East and figured in ancient art as the emblem of affection, breeding readily in confinement to eight broods a year but impatient of cold and unable to range free. About ten inches long, it is grey tinged vinaceous with a black demi-collar on the hind neck, pale clove-brown back, and white vent; in the wild it inhabits African woods, laying two white eggs.
