Purple-Crowned Turteline

Ptiliopus purpuratus

A lovely bird of nine to ten inches, dwelling in the wooded districts of the Friendly Islands, the Celebes, Timor, and Australia, where it subsists on fruits and berries and utters pleasing cooing notes. The crown bears a patch of rich amaranth bordered by king’s-yellow, the upper plumage glossy parrot-green, the belly passing from rose-lilac through orange to yellow, with feet adapted for perching among the trees.
