Moreau’s Calligraphic Types used in Les Saintes Metamorphoses, Paris

From a copy in Harvard College Library (facsimile), Google Books (scan)

1644

Moreau’s types are cleverly shown in J. Baudoin’s Les Saintes Metamorphoes ou Les Changemens miraculeux de quelques grands Saints…À Paris, en l’Imprimeri des nouveaux Caractherses [sic] de P. Moreau, Me Escrivain Juré à Paris, & Imprimeur ordre du Roy… 1644. In this book the type (for once) really appears to be writing—a careful and lively copy of the agreeable calligraphy of the period. The ornaments used with it are reproductions of writing-masters’ scrolls and whimsical figures, and there and there heavy flourishes are added to words to produce a further illusion of penmanship.
