In the Godfrey of Boloyne of 1481 Caxton employed his Type 4, a disagreeable, rough, and more compact letter, resembling some used by Machlinia in his Speculum Christiani about 1486, and that used at St. Albans in 1481. Ugly as it is, it was apparently a favourite of Caxton’s.
